Influence of Non-Uniform Electric Field Due to Spherical Collector on Particle Dynamics in Quiescent Air
Published in Journal of Electrostatics, 2024
Abstract
This study investigates the dynamics of charged particles approaching a spherical collector under a non-uniform electric field using a combination of experimental observations and numerical simulations. The results demonstrate that particle trajectories are primarily governed by the competition between electrostatic attraction and aerodynamic drag, whereas gravitational and dielectrophoretic forces contribute only marginally. The analysis reveals that particles passing closer to the collector center experience a significantly larger electrostatic work input, resulting in higher kinetic energy and non-uniform deposition characteristics. A detailed energy budget analysis further identifies a critical transition where electrostatic work exceeds viscous dissipation, providing new insight into particle transport and deposition mechanisms in non-uniform electric fields. These findings improve the understanding of electrostatic particle collection and offer useful guidance for the design and optimization of electrostatic filtration and aerosol collection systems.
